It’s a crisp fall Saturday in Vienna, and my family is visiting from Roanoke, VA. After hearing countless stories about Vienna’s incredible restaurants, charming shops, and walkable streets, they’re finally here to see it all for themselves. Time to put my Vienna pride to the test!

12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Stop #1:

Used Book Cellar at Historic Freeman Store & Museum

My mom, my sister, and I start our day at the Historic Freeman Store & Museum and make our way to the used book cellar. I promised I wouldn’t gatekeep this one: the used book cellar is an absolute hidden gem. Bring your reusable tote to haul your book bargains home. I’ve told my family about the incredible finds in this book basement –it’s my one of my favorite places in Vienna and a regular stop on my lunchtime walks.

Stop #2:

Pennywise Thrift Shop

We cross Historic Church Street and wander into Pennywise Thrift Shop. Pennywise has plenty of treasures to choose from, including clothing, household items, and yes – books – in case we didn’t get our fill at the cellar.

Stop #3:

Pear Tree Cottage

Next, I show my mom and sister how convenient it is to hop on the W&OD trail and head back towards Maple Avenue. We enter Pear Tree Cottage, which for me is the retail equivalent of seeing the server bringing your food over in a restaurant. The excitement of knowing “this is going to be good.” Pear Tree doesn’t disappoint. We enjoy exploring the beautiful art, antiques, and unique household décor. Owner Jennie and her team are as warm and welcoming as ever.

Stop #4:

Bear Branch Tavern

Finally! Hungry and happy after an afternoon of book, thrift, and antique hunting, we arrive at Bear Branch Tavern to refuel and enjoy the beautiful weather. My dad and brother-in-law have been holding down a table since we arrived — college football is more their vibe than shopping. They have a fresh order of Tuna Poke Nachos waiting for us with Beer Cheese & Pretzels on the way. To be loved is to be known.
