Community members and elected officials gathered on July 30 to celebrate the grand opening of Shilla Bakery with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Shilla Bakery, located at 340 Maple Avenue W, offers an impressive variety of baked goods and pastries, including Korean bakery staples and globally-inspired sweets.
This is the first Town of Vienna location for the Yu family, who opened their original Korean bakery in Annandale back in 1999. That was also the year Michelle Yu was born. “A big year for the family,” she said.
Now a professionally-trained pastry chef and graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Michelle has taken the reins of the Vienna location and is giving the family business a fresh twist. At Tuesday’s ribbon cutting, she was joined by her mom, dad, brother, and a handful of family and friends who have supported the bakery’s journey every step of the way.
“My dad always called this a 100-year business,” Michelle said. “It’s an honor to be part of it.”
Shilla Bakery is known for its flavorful breads, cakes, and pastries that blend Korean, French, and American influences. Michelle’s creativity shines through in the Vienna location’s rotating menu, which features seasonal specialties and Instagram-worthy desserts. (Fall flavors are coming soon: think butterscotch, apple, pumpkin spice, and more.)
